Belize- Culture & Adventure in Style -10 day itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival in Belize City. Private transfer to El Cayo. Overnight at Kaana Resort. Dbl Balam Suite
Inspiration comes alive at Ka’ana, a luxe outpost where wandering spirits roam free. Nestled deep in the tropical jungle of western Belize, our boutique resort is an oasis of style, culture, personalized service, and modern amenities for well-seasoned adventurers and tastemakers alike. Our location on the doorstep of an ancient Maya city has inspired Ka’ana’s name, which means “Heavenly Place.”
Our five graciously appointed Balam Suites are nestled in a luxurious, hacienda-style home. Each with a private entrance and lovely outdoor sitting area overlooking the pool or tropical gardens, these intimate rooms have everything you need to feel revitalized and ready for the adventures that await.
Day 2 - Barton Creek Cave & Xunantunich Mayan Ruins (Lunch included) Overnight at Kaana Resort. Dbl Balam Suite.
About 45 minutes from San Ignacio is an exciting canoe trip into a remote cave formerly used by the ancient Mayans as a burial site and for ceremonial purposes. A visit to Barton Creek Cave involves spending over an hour paddling canoes along an ancient Mayan waterway inside the mountain. Your guide will point out skulls and artifacts as you pass between stalactites. The high ceiling, beautiful rock flows and cathedral chambers makes this a beautiful place to photograph. The cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Mayan pottery shards and bones can be observed by the guide’s spotlights. En-route to the cave you will drive through the traditional Mennonite village of Upper Barton Creek.
Driving the Western Highway and through the town of San Ignacio, we head to the village of San Jose Succotz, where we take a hand-cranked ferry over the Mopan River to the site of Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock). Xunantunich flourished during the Classic-period and appears to have survived the Maya "collapse" to remain an important population centre until around AD 1000. The site has 5 main plazas, although only 3 plazas are evident to visitors today. Dominating the site is El Castillo, rising to over 120 feet. A steep, but short climb to the top is highly recommended. This vantage point provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Mopan and Belize River valleys, as well as Guatemala to the west. You will also get a close look at the restored portion of two unique stucco friezes.
Located on a hill overlooking San Ignacio, Cahal Pech is a medium sized but major Mayan center. Situated on top of an acropolis on the Macal River, the center of Cahal Pech consists of 34 structures in a small area of only 2 acres. A visitors’ Center contains artifacts and a reconstructed model of the site. There are many small restaurants in the area serving excellent local food, or you may choose to bring along a picnic lunch.
Day 3 - Breakfast. Mountain Pine Ridge Lodge. Overnight at Kaana Resort. Dbl Balaam Suite
The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is the oldest of Belize’s national parks. This tour takes in the most scenic sites in the park, as well as some of less visited, but equally as impressive, sites. Our first stop is the viewpoint to the spectacular Hidden Valley Falls (or 1000 ft Falls), which thunders over a granite ledge into the mists below. Traveling higher and deeper into the reserve, we travel to Baldy Beacon – one of the highest accessible areas in Belize for a panoramic view of the reserve.
e then visit the Rio Frio Cave, an ancient Maya burial site with an enormous arched entranceway. The Rio Frio (Cold River) flows in one end of this cave and out the other, helping create smooth limestone walls and sharp stalactites. A short drive from the cave is the fire lookout tower, with spectacular views over the forest.
Your next stop is the Rio On Pools and Falls, a beautiful picnic spot and perfect for a cool dip or swim in the many natural pools created by the rocks and falls. Furthermore, various species of birds, bromeliads, hardwood trees and orchids are common to the area.
Day 4 - Breakfast. Horseback Riding in the Forest. Overnight at Kaana Resort. Dbl Balaam Suite.
